Garden center sprouts up on Main Street

»  Comments | Post a Comment

South Main Street just got a whole lot prettier.

Shenandoah Garden Spot opened next to 7-Eleven Thursday, and everything’s been coming up roses since.

It’s the second shop with the same name owned and operated by Greg and Tammy Garr, a married couple from Shenandoah. Their other store is in Elkton.

“This was a great location,” Tammy said Thursday of their expansion into Culpeper. “We’ve wanted to open another one, and we were riding around one day, saw this spot and thought it was perfect.”

Shenandoah Garden Spot is located in the former Betty Brown Flower Shop — across from the Lord Culpeper Hotel — in a building that once housed a Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Originally from Orange, the Garrs moved to Shenandoah 17 years ago. They said their new business — like the one in the valley — is also a ministry.

“We’re a one-stop garden shop where the Son is always shining,” said Greg, referencing his Christian beliefs while running in and out of the store to help customers browsing potted plants, flowers and produce set up in the parking lot adjoining 7-Eleven. “We’re a ministry first, a business second.”

“God reached down real, real far and pulled me up out of a lot of trouble,” he explained. “We owe him a lot.”

Not just a garden center, the business is a full-service florist, capable of doing weddings and funerals. Shenandoah Garden Spot also sells gifts, jams, jellies, honey and produce (corn, tomatoes, peaches, pumpkins, etc.) grown in the valley.

The Garrs get most of their plants from a group of local Mennonites, and it’s all Virginia-grown. Parents to a 15-year-old and 20-year-old, the couple was not concerned about their new 50-minute commute from over the mountain and were excited about their new business spot.

“It’s great being in Culpeper,” Tammy said. “People are super excited we are here.”
