Dr. Susan Miller believes a multipronged approach is the best way to treat those who suffer from chronic pain.
Miller, board certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, joined the Culpeper Surgery Center and began practicing here three months ago. She received her medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 2002 and was certified in physical medicine rehab in 2007. Miller is also an assistant professor of physical medicine and rehab at U.Va.
Rehabilitation specialists are considered experts in treating and diagnosing pain. Their work involves restoring function without surgery, leading a team of medical professionals and providing advice on preventing health problems that might lead to other painful conditions.
Miller said she likes specializing in rehab and pain management because it impacts a person’s entire life.
“Oftentimes, I take a multimodality approach, accessing physical therapy, sometimes injections, education, sometimes even psychological counseling,” said Miller. “I find that works better than one treatment like medication.
“We work with patients with disabilities as well as healthy athletes that might have an injury. We try to look at the whole person.”
Miller’s specific areas of focus include back and neck pain, sports injuries and assisting patients with worker’s compensation matters. She also regularly sees patients who are dealing with arthritis-related issues and other joint disorders and diseases.
In addition, Miller said she’s introducing her patients to several new treatments and products if they seem appropriate for their condition. One of them is a knee injection to help control arthritis symptoms.
“That’s very effective for controlling pain there,” she said, adding that the injections are helpful for those dealing with painful spinal conditions.
Currently, Miller is practicing in Culpeper once a week on Thursdays only, but plans are in the works to expand by hiring a second physician. That move should be made by summer.
Miller’s office is located at 541 Sunset Lane, Suite 103. Call 829-1919 for more information.
