An Alexandria man is facing charges in Culpeper after an alcohol-fueled incident on Sunday night left another person wounded from gunfire.
Richard C. Morgan, 21, is charged with breaking and entering and two counts of misdemeanor simple assault. He is free on bond, according to court records. Morgan is due in General District court on Aug. 2 at 9:30 a.m.
Sheriff’s office spokeswoman Corey Byers said the incident began around 10 p.m. Morgan is suspected of travelling to Culpeper from northern Virginia to start an altercation.
Deputies were called to a residence in the 16000 block of Oak Shade Road for a reported fight in progress. When they arrived, Byers said witnesses told police that Morgan and one acquaintance entered the residence and an argument ensued. Residents of the home then allegedly defended themselves and escorted Morgan and the others out of the house at gunpoint.
At some point during the confrontation, deputies determined that a shot was fired, wounding an acquaintance of Morgans.
The unidentified shooting victim was transported to the hospital and treated for a single, non life-threatening gunshot wound.
Authorities say alcohol played a factor in the incident.
The Criminal Investigations Division of the Sheriff’s Office is investigating and further charges are pending. However, they declined to release additional details about the case Thursday afternoon, citing the ongoing investigation.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact investigator Justin Dole at the sheriff’s office at 727-7523, ext 153.
