A 26-year-old Front Royal resident — one of two men accused in the abduction and malicious wounding of a Culpeper man last month — turned himself in to Culpeper police Monday.
Devin Michael Copeland, accompanied by his attorney, was arrested around 11:20 a.m. and is being held without bond at Culpeper County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in General District Court today at 8:30 a.m.
Copeland was charged with malicious wounding, wearing a mask, abduction, conspiracy to commit abduction, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, conspiracy to commit abduction and extortion, and conspiracy to commit robbery.
Authorities are still on the lookout for a 26-year-old Woodbridge man they believe was also involved in the Feb. 17 incident. Quintel Juwan Levenberry, 26, faces the same charges as Copeland.
Levenberry is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds.
Antrina Bright, 25, of the 600 block of Claire Paige Way in Culpeper, was also charged last month in connection with the crime. She faces robbery charges.
According to Culpeper town spokesman Wally Bunker, the abduction occurred around 11 p.m. Feb. 17. The victim’s sister called police and told them that two gloved and masked men had taken the victim from a house on Claire Paige way, just before the entrance to the Lakeview subdivision on Virginia Avenue. The woman told police that the two men were demanding money for her brother’s safe return.
Using a cell phone, the victim reportedly told his sister to collect the money and proceed to a location identified by his captors. The victim, his girlfriend and Bright lived in the same residence on Claire Paige Way.
Initially, police focused the investigation on Bright, who claimed she was bound with duct tape when the men entered the home. But Bunker said her story began to change after further questioning.
Meanwhile, police notified neighboring jurisdictions to be on the lookout for the victim and the alleged suspect vehicle.
Soon after, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a man bound with duct tape who had made it to a home in Midland seeking assistance after being thrown from a vehicle.
The victim was transported to Fauquier Hospital, where he was treated for abrasions and contusions to his face, arms and legs. The victim was later released.
According to authorities, Copeland and Levenberry knew the victim and there are suspected gang ties.
Suspect No. 2 still on loose
