A Culpeper County High School teacher is free on bond after being charged with assaulting a 19-year-old stepdaughter at home.
Michael McKenna, 45, of the 600 block of Mountain View Drive, is charged with assault and battery on a family member, a class one misdemeanor. He was also served with an emergency protective order. McKenna is free on $3,000 secured bond. He is due in Juvenile and Domestic Relations court on March 18 at 8:30 a.m.
Town spokesman Wally Bunker said the victim called police around 9 p.m. Wednesday.
“The police responded, spoke to the victim and then went to the house, where they conducted an investigation and arrested Michael McKenna on the assault and battery charge,” Bunker said.
The CCHS Web site identifies McKenna as a social studies teacher. Last year, Culpeper County Public Schools named him the CCHS teacher of the year.
Superintendent Bobbi Johnson said McKenna has worked for the school division for 10 years. By e-mail, Johnson said that the incident was brought to her attention on Thursday.
“Based on my understanding of the situation, the incident occurred off school property. This matter is under investigation and review,” said Johnson.
“We have specific policies for employees who are charged with a felony or who have a founded case of child abuse,” she continued. “My information indicates that neither of these situations apply in this matter.”
