» For the senior-laden squad, going out with a perfect season was, well, the perfect ending.
They’ve got a great thing going down there at Madison County High School.
The boys basketball team last week won the Class A state championship, beating Altavista 41-38 to cap a perfect season. With a 26-0 record, Madison claimed its first state title in 33 years, relying on a vast amount of senior leadership from start to finish.
And what a finish it was!
Congratulations to first-year coach Ben Breeden for guiding the team to the promised land. And a healthy dose of credit goes to former coach Tim Taylor, now an assistant with the University of Virginia’s women’s team, for providing a winning foundation. Also, a “job well done” to Logan Terrell, who became the school’s all-time leading scorer this season.
It’s been a remarkable two-year run for the Mountaineers, losing only one game (last year’s state semifinal) in that span. As a community, we’ve enjoyed watching you guys rise above the competition.
Best of luck to the MCHS basketball seniors as they enter life off the hardwood. May you enjoy the same success in all your endeavors.

In other school news, we send our congratulations to Sue Bridges, principal at A.G. Richardson Elementary, for being named a “transformational leader” by the National Association of Elementary School Principals. Bridges is certainly deserving of the honor, which is bestowed upon only seven people each year. ...
It’s the season for school plays, that’s for sure! In the past few weeks, we’ve seen everything from “Charlie Brown” and “Fiddler on the Roof” to “Murder at the Banquet” and “A Night on Broadway.” And, starting tomorrow, “The Story of Ruth” debuts at Culpeper Christian School. We salute our county’s young thespians and appreciate those who put so much into making the theater come alive ...
Finally, kudos to Tae Ahn Kim, a fifth-grader at Farmington Elementary School, for winning Culpeper County’s spelling bee. Kim made it to the second round at the regional competition in Fredericksburg.
