Outdoorsman Tom Seay will retrace on horseback Abraham Lincoln’s commute from his cottage to the White House on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The ride will be filmed for an upcoming episode on the television show, Best of America by Horseback, which airs nationwide on RFD-TV.
Lincoln lived in the cottage at the Soldiers’ Home from June through November from 1862 through 1864. He was living here when he drafted the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation and deliberated critical issues of the Civil War.
The president commuted three miles daily by horseback or coach, last visiting the cottage the day before his assassination in April 1865.
The U.S. Marine Corps Mounted Color Guard, led by Gunnery Sgt. Peter McConnell, will escort Seay on the ride. Also escorting Seay will be officers from the U.S. Park Police Horse Mounted Unit and DC Metro Police Mounted Unit.
Riding alongside Seay, will be Jim Shelhorse, retired public information officer and mounted officer with the Fredericksburg Police Department, Jack Peacock, a retired Marine and frequent guest on the television show and Bob Vance, who was an assistant trail master on the recent Mexico to Canada trail ride with Best of America by Horseback.
Opened to the public for the first time in 2008, Lincoln’s cottage offers guided tours providing an in-depth, media-enhanced experience highlighting the president’s ideas and actions through historical images and voices. The Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center, adjacent to the cottage, houses thematic galleries and changing exhibitions providing visitors opportunities for in-depth exploration of Lincoln’s life and times.
