The 24-year-old Culpeper woman accused of killing a Florida man two months after she met him on Craigslist this summer will face a jury in January.
Latoya Korren Jordan is scheduled to appear in a St. Johns County court in Florida on Jan. 23 at 9 a.m., according to court records.
But before her jury trial begins, her case is due back in court on Jan. 9 at 9 a.m. for a felony docket call, a court appearance by an defense attorney to report on the status of a case, explaining whether he or she is prepared to continue with the trial.
Jordan, who faces first-degree murder for reportedly killing 53-year-old Daniel Stuart Somerson in his Fruit Cove, Fla., home in July, reportedly met the victim online toward the end of May.
Deputies found Somerson’s badly decomposed body inside his home in the 1100 block of Popolee Road on July 8.
Florida investigators said Jordan admitted to stabbing the victim to death. Police said dental records were needed to identify the murder victim.
Jordan, a Fairfax native who moved to Culpeper last year, also faces other charges stemming from this case including grand theft and burglary with assault or battery.
After meeting the suspect online, police said, Somerson reportedly picked her up and returned to his home in Florida.
Deputies said Jordan had been living with Somerson for a while when “something went wrong, prompting an argument that led to the killing.”
At the time of her arrest, police said, Jordan was living with another 50-something Florida man she met on Craigslist.
Jordan reportedly stayed at the victim’s home for some time after his death until she met a Fountain, Fla., man, who picked her up and took her to the Tampa area. Responding to a welfare check on Somerson, police found that the victim had been deceased for a period of time.
While tracking Jordan’s movements this summer, detectives learned her whereabouts and the various online aliases she used to lure older men.
Additionally, the Florida murder isn’t Jordan’s first brush with the law. She was charged with assaulting her older brother, Iven Justice Jordan, in Culpeper on Oct. 20, 2010. Court records show that the Culpeper incident took place at 1044 Virginia Avenue in the Redwood Lakes subdivision.
For the assault and battery charge — a class 1 misdemeanor — Jordan was ordered to submit to random urine screenings, attend anger management classes and avoid violent contact with the victim. She also faces a contempt of court warrant for failure to appear in Culpeper County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court in April.
Court records also show that Jordan was living in Culpeper when she reportedly assaulted her older brother in October 2010.
