The unemployment rate in Culpeper County has declined for nine consecutive months.
In April, the seasonally unadjusted rate was 6.3 percent, according to figures released Wednesday by the Virginia Employment Commission. That’s down from 7.1 percent in March, 7.5 percent in February and 7.7 percent in January.
In the five-county region, Culpeper was tied with Orange County for the highest unemployment rate.
Fauquier and Rappahannock counties tied for the lowest at 4.4 percent, the seventh lowest in the entire state. Madison County had 4.8 percent unemployment in April.
According to the VEC, the civilian labor force in Culpeper is 21,740; 1,359 residents collected unemployment in April. Culpeper’s unemployment, in recent years, peaked in February 2010 at 9.1 percent.
The Rappahannock-Rapidan Planning District, including the five aforementioned counties, has the third lowest unemployment of the planning districts statewide, behind Northern Virginia at No. 1 with 4.1 percent joblessness and the Thomas Jefferson PD, including Charlottesville and Greene County, at No. 2 with 4.9 percent unemployment.
The city of Martinsville continued to lead the state for unemployment in April with 16.7 percent; Arlington had the lowest at 3.4 percent.
Nationally, the state of Virginia had the seventh lowest unemployment rate in April (5.8 percent). North Dakota was No. 1 with 3.2 percent unemployment and Nevada had the worst with 11.9 percent joblessness.
