Leader of the 1970s folk music group Trapezoid, prolific songwriter Paul Reisler brings his 1,000 Questions to Culpeper Saturday night to perform a benefit concert for the State Theatre. The Hazel River Armory on East Davis Street hosts the 8 p.m. show.
A longtime resident of Little Washington in Rappahannock County, Reisler is also known for creating and implementing Kid Pan Alley, a songwriting program that inspires children to make their own music.
Joining him in Culpeper as part of his new band, Paul Reisler & 1,000 Questions, will be harmonica player Howard Levy, who played with Grammy-winning Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Singer Amy Speace, of New York City, provides the vocals, and multi-instrumentalist Joe Craven plays fiddle, mandolin and more. Craven played with a wide range of artists including Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead.
Saturday night’s show features acoustic world music with hints of jazz and folk, said Reisler, who grew up in the D.C. area. He started writing songs as a 5-year-old and most recently composed a full-length orchestra piece. Reisler said he writes out of love.
“I see something beautiful that touches me and I want to share that,” he said.
State Theatre Foundation Director Raven Yates said interest in the concert has been solid and that they were excited about presenting an example of what the State Theatre would show once open. Event sponsors include the Virginia Commission for the Arts.
