The groundhog was right – winter is not over yet.

The National Weather Service predicts an 80 percent chance for snow today in Culpeper County with a high near 37. The winter precipitation will begin late morning as a snow-rain mix, and switch to all snow by the afternoon ending after sunset, according to a meteorologist in the NWS Sterling office.

About an inch accumulation is expected.

Thursday in Culpeper will be sunny with a high near 48. Friday will be sunny with a high near 52. The weekend will be colder, according to the NWS, with highs in the 40s.

The area has not seen a major snow event this winter. Last week, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, predicting another six weeks of winter.

During the winter of 2009-10, Culpeper experienced triple the average snowfall – more than 50 inches.
