As canines from across the world converged on Madison Square Garden to compete at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show earlier this week, a locally co-owned Greater Swiss Mountain Dog continued his breed dominance and took best of breed honors at the prestigious event.
GCh. Nox’s Luck of the Irish, aka George, bested 13 other working dogs to take top honors for the breed. Rixeyville mountain dog breeder and George’s co-owner, Colleen Robson, showed George’s brother, GCh. Nox’s Luck of the Irish, aka Otis, who received first Award of Merit. Professional handler Jessy Sutton showed George.
To wow the judges dogs must display exemplary examples of proper bone structure, head, top line, muscle tone, animation and temperament to name a few.
George adds the Westminster victory to breed wins at the GSMD National Specialty and American Kennel Club/Eukenuba dog shows in 2011, completing what Robson refers to as the “triple crown” of dog shows.
When he is not winning dog shows, George, who spends a majority of time with his Charlottesville co-owners Nancy Kechner and Julie Comer, can be found at his sidejob working as the University of Virginia women’s rugby team mascot.
At just about three years old, George and Otis are still considered puppies. The future certainly looks bright for these working group pups.
