Culpeper residents and businesses got in on the Mardi Gras celebration throughout the day Saturday during the Culpeper Renaissance Inc.’s downtown Carnivale event.
From live music to Louisiana-style cooking, there was something for everyone at this festive affair. Early Saturday afternoon, a steady crowd of youngsters and their parents visited the Museum of Culpeper History to decorate their choice of opera style or wraparound masks and received the popular purple, yellow and green beads associated with the celebration.
“We’re happy to say that this special event has brought in a nice crowd,” said Gloria Cooper, museum director, who personally helped the children decorate their colored masks with beads, cotton balls and googly eyes. Cooper said that the museum was much busier than normal due to the event.
“It was great that Culpeper Renaissance established this thing,” she said. As kids finished their masks, attendees, young and old, couldn’t help but wander around the various displays, from Civil War history to Native American exhibits.
Throughout the evening, strolling street performers, live music and artists were on the agenda for downtown businesses. Several restaurants’ special was the Louisiana specialty, gumbo including Hazel River Inn, The Stable, Raven’s Nest and Thyme Market. Most downtown restaurants tweaked their menu in some way to join the celebration.
Festivities were expected to continue late into the night with the Fred Williams Band rounding out the night at The Smokehouse.
