A grease fire gutted a small yellow house on Spring Street in the town of Culpeper Sunday afternoon.
The fire started in the kitchen, according to Johnny Yowell, the middle-aged man who was displaced from the single-family home.
“I was cooking some steak and fries and I thought I had turned the stove off,” said the distraught man shaking his head.
Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Department known as Co. 1, located just blocks away, responded immediately to the call, which was dispatched around 2 p.m.
Brandy Station, Reva and Salem Volunteer Fire and Rescue personnel also assisted along with Co. 11, Co. 12 and town police officers.
The house is located at 314 Spring Street off of Blue Ridge Avenue.
Co. 1 chief Kenny Mills estimates that the fire caused about $50,000 worth of damage. Mills said the fire was contained to three rooms from the kitchen to the front door.
Fire crews had the fire extinguished within 35 minutes and it took about two hours to overhaul, Mills added.
Johnny Yowell planned to stay with his brother Billy Yowell, who serves as vice mayor on Culpeper Town Council.
