Parents mark second anniversary of discovery of daughter's remains

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The parents of Morgan D. Harrington marked another grim anniversary Thursday, this time noting the second anniversary of her remains' discovery.

An Albemarle County farmer checking a fenceline found the slain college student's bones in January 2010.

Since then, there have been leads - which continue to trickle in - but no arrests.
State police are now cooperating with the FBI on the case, and the hope is that new eyes will see new angles, the Harringtons said Thursday.

Among the most promising angles of investigation were the location of the body and the DNA hit in the case.

The DNA hit tied Harrington's killing to a 2005 sexual assault in Fairfax. The victim in that case had helped police come up with a sketch of the criminal.

The body's location, in a pasture at the back of the farm, seemed to preclude a casually selected dump site, picked at the last minute from a road.

The couple believes the killer would likely either have entered through a nearby subdivision or taken a four-wheel drive past residences on the farm, Dan Harrington said.

But the combination of a picture and someone with some sort of local ties has so far not led to a killer.

"Someone, somewhere, knows something," said Gil Harrington. "Charlottesville, please, spit out Morgan Harrington's killer."

The Harringtons also thanked all of the rescue groups that helped search for their daughter.

The not knowing, they said, was even worse than the knowing that came later.

"The death of Morgan was tragic to us, but the not knowing was horrible," said Dan Harrington.

Gil Harrington read a poem she had written, "Grisly Anniversary." The writing, she said, helped her deal with the painful memories. For example, she said, she recently found the cereal they'd had in the house for her daughter.

"Every day is riddled with sharp points," she said.

A reward of $150,041 is available for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Tips can be sent to state police at 352-3467 or bci-appomattox@vsp.virginia.gov or to Crimestoppers at 977-4000.
