A stream of singers, dancers, musicians and other performers took the stage Friday night at the 20th annual Culpeper County High School “Act Like You Like It” talent show.
With proceeds going to the drama department, about 100 people showed up at CCHS auditorium to cheer on the 14 acts. Organizers sent an open invitation to any students that wanted to audition for the student-run show. CCHS drama director, Robbin Paige Sharp, sponsored the event.
Katrina Wright kicked off the evening in a blonde wig and big sunglasses with her lip synching impersonation of Lady Gaga’s hit “Telephone.” Next, Ryan Wical turned back the clock and performed Bobby Darin’s song, “Beyond the Sea.” Wical’s a capella take on the classic song was spot on.
Other highlights of the night included the guitar playing of Kyle Rising, Jason Sherman, Kayla Pence and Bailey Hayes. Jake Printz and Scotti Drumgoole showed off their dancing skills.
Armenian foreign exchange student Ani Ghazaryan sang a song titled “Momma” in her native language. “I want to dedicate this song to all the orphans in the world,” she said, noting that it was a sad tune. Although the words were in a foreign language, the sadness she conveyed needed no translation.
Sharp said the proceeds from the event would help fund drama productions in the works. At budget time, usually art and music funding are the first to go. Sharp explained the importance of keeping these programs in schools.
“Without it, the kids don’t get to express themselves. They have no outlet,” she said.
