Beginning Feb. 8, Williams Street is going one-way.
The town of Culpeper announced Friday its plan to restrict traffic on the two-way street to a one-way traffic pattern, allowing only eastbound traffic flowing from North West Street toward Main Street.
The change is in response to citizen concerns and for safer roads, according to a town release.
“It’s a bad intersection,” said Town Public Works Director Jim Hoy. “The real driver of this action is correcting a public safety issue.”
Located just north of Sperryville Pike near Mountain Run, Williams Street has a compound curve and retaining walls at its intersection with West Street, creating major line of sight issues for motorists attempting to turn onto the busy thoroughfare that turns into Old Rixeyville Road.
A concave mirror at the intersection does not help much since it is difficult to judge the distance of oncoming traffic using it in addition to the retaining wall acting as a further impediment.
“It is the worst of conditions,” Hoy said.
On Feb. 8, public works crews will install signs at the Williams Street intersection with Main Street (at Culpeper Cleaners) indicating, Do Not Enter, Wrong Way and One-Way. Additional signs will be placed for apartment dwellers leaving the parking lot and for motorists using the alley from West Williams to Main Street and at North West Street, noting the change in traffic pattern.
Once the new signs are up, traffic on West Williams Street will be restricted to the eastbound direction toward Main Street. Call public works at (540) 825-0285 with questions.
