Biking for a cause

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Cycling enthusiasts in Culpeper won’t have to travel this weekend to enjoy a long, scenic ride.

The Culpeper Cycling Century will be held Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. to benefit the Culpeper Recreation Foundation.

The bike ride, which will begin at The Bike Stop in downtown Culpeper, will feature routes of 35, 67 and 101 miles through Culpeper and southern Fauquier Counties. The cost to register is $35 if preregistering and $45 the day of the ride.

All proceeds will help build concession stands and restrooms at the Culpeper County Sports Complex adjacent to Eastern View High School.

“This will be an annual event that we think will be a very positive event for Culpeper recreation and tourism,” said Charlie Barrell, one of the organizers of the ride. “Culpeper has a large group of bike riders and we’ve participating in rides in Madison County in the spring and Rappahannock County and Fauquier County in the fall. We’ve been talking about how Culpeper ought to have one because we have more bike riders in Culpeper than any of those places.”

The rides will have rest stops and vehicle assistance for riders that can’t finish the route for any reason. The first 250 riders to register will receive a T-shirt to commemorate the event.

Vehicle traffic may impacted on the secondary roads of the routes, including Route 522 from Algonquin Road to Mitchells Road and from Griffinsburg to the new Salem Fire Department and on Route 15 from Cedar Mountain Drive to Old Orange Road.

Information can be obtained online at culpeperchamber.com, culpeperdowntown.com, visitculpeper.com or culpepercounty.gov. Information is also available at The Bike Stop or by calling the Culpeper County Department of Parks and Recreation at 727-3412.
