FEEDING THE PROGRAMS: Eastern View football coach Greg Hatfield and Culpeper’s Mike Williams hosted a clinic for CFA and Madison Youth Football coaches at EVHS Sunday.

The countdown begins today.

The Cyclones and Blue Devils will line up on opposing sidelines as rivals in just over a month but they were on the same page Sunday. Well, at least their coaches were.

“We really just wanted to cultivate our relationship with the CFA,” Eastern View coach Greg Hatfield said. “It’s been great talking with all these guys, helping them out and helping football in the community.”

About 90 coaches crowded the halls at Eastern View Sunday for the first annual coaches clinic.

Hatfield and Culpeper High School coach Mike Williams hosted the event for youth coaches from Culpeper and Madison as a way to share some knowledge and get to know the guys mentoring their future players.

“It’s been a fun day just being with these guys and talking some football,” Hatfield said. “I think we’re making our teams and their teams better.

It’s important for us to have a relationship with these guys (CFA coaches) because it makes it easier for their kids to root for us and be a little more comfortable when they get to this level.”

Williams and Hatfield brought most of their assistants along to help work with the youth coaches and learn a few things along the way.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re teaching or learning,” CCHS assistant Andy Ulrich said. “It’s football. You just get to be out here and talk football and this close to the season I’m just waiting for the kids to get out there and start hitting.”

The high school staffs went over plenty of basic techniques during the three-hour clinic and they also talked a little philosophy.

“We’ve just been going over basic stuff like blocking, tackling, lining up and getting into stances,” Hatfield said. “We also talked about what we want to accomplish in a practice and how to get the most bang for our buck.”

The Culpeper Football Association has grown into one of the largest youth football organizations in Virginia and the coaches know how important it is for them to get their players ready for the next level.

“I’ve been really impressed today,” said Lynn Hackley, coach of the Blue Devils in the CFA’s Ankle Biter Division. “As a coach you kind of wonder what these guys can teach me, but we all know our main job is to teach these kids the best way we can and this is going to help.”
