Sweating it out

By the time he was hired last month, new Culpeper County High School football coach Mike Williams was already playing catch up with other programs that were in the midst of their offseason workout programs.

But now, with summer vacation just around the corner, Williams believes the Blue Devils are making up ground. With no coach in place in the early spring, Culpeper missed many opportunities to sign up for area team camps and 7-on-7 passing tournaments. But the Devils have participated in some informal 7-on-7’s with neighboring schools and had players participate in a big-man camp at Eastern View.

Williams has also held conditioning sessions at CCHS every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday night and will host a Big Man Challenge on next Thursday with “World’s Strongest Man”-like competitions for linemen.

“Skill players get to play 7-on-7 just about everyday, but the linemen don’t get to do a lot,” Williams said. “This is something fun to keep them involved. We’ve had a lot of kids active in the weight room and kids have taken to some new concepts really well.”

About 30 players were at the CCHS gym on Monday going through some conditioning drills before lifting weights. Williams said there had been an average of about 40 showing up for earlier sessions and the players say there’s been excitement generating as they prepare for a new era of Blue Devils football.

“There’s been more people coming out here every time,” CCHS rising junior Robbie Mays said. “Every week there’s been three or four more people. Everybody is working hard and we want to win.

When (Williams) showed up everybody got to know him real fast and after the first week I felt like he’d been my coach for a few years.”

Williams said the overall response to his ideas for Culpeper football has been positive.

“We had a parents meeting and I’ve basically outlined how I will run my program and my expectations,” Williams said. “They were very accepting.”
