A hall of famer coming to town ranks right up there as a pretty uncommon occurrence, unless, of course, you live in Culpeper.

Ultimate Fight Championship Hall of Famer Dan “The Beast” Severn will make his third appearance in Culpeper in as many years Wednesday at Zamora Boxing Gym on Montanus Drive.

“It’s awesome,” said Eric Zamora, owner and head trainer at Zamora Boxing Gym. “I’ve said that every time, but it really is. The guy is just a good, humble guy.”

About 17 mixed martial artists and curious fans were in attendance last July when Severn laughed and joked about his career while showing off some of the techniques that earned him the UFC championship at UFC 5.

“He treats us as if we’re family and friends,” Zamora said of Severn. “It’s such an honor to have a guy who is an ambassador for the sport to come here and teach a bunch of amateurs and treat them like professionals.”

Severn made his mark as the first truly accomplished wrestler to step into the cage. It was his grappling expertise that helped 51-year-old Coldwater, Mich. native become one of only a few fighters who have over 100 career bouts.

Clinch and grappling techniques will be on display Wednesday at the gym located behind Target. Severn will also demonstrate several throws and submissions — many of which Zamora has seen in his fighters’ recent victories.

“You have people who are teachers, and people who are just doers,” Zamora said. “He’s both. He’s the guy that shows you how to do something and you know he believes in what he’s saying because he just did it.”

Severn is also known for his time with Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Entertainment (formerly WWF), and there certainly won’t be a shortage of memorabilia or entertaining anecdotes about his time in the cage and the ring.

“You really can’t have a better teacher,” Zamora said. “The knowledge he shares every time is amazing.”

Severn will be at Zamora Boxing Gym from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is $35. For more information, contact Eric Zamora at 223-5360.
