Warrior Fighting Championship returns this weekend with its fourth amateur mixed martial arts show in Culpeper, but the action will be in a new venue.
WFC will hold “Aftermath” Saturday at Germanna Community College’s Daniel Technology Center, 18121 Technology Drive.
The previous three shows have been at the Reva Fire Hall, but WFC promoter Eric Zamora said Daniel Technology Center can hold more than 500 people, whereas the Reva Fire Hall could only house a little more than 300.
Zamora also said the facilities at Daniel Technology Center give him a chance to give the show more of a “UFC type of feel.”
“I can’t always control the action in the ring, but what I can control in the show’s production value,” said Zamora, owner of Zamora Boxing Gym in Culpeper. “It’s going to be a little different this time because we’re going to focus on the production side.”
Fans can expect intricate lighting sequences during fighters’ entrances and a spotlight on the cage to enhance the audience’s view of the action, according to Zamora. Fight fans can also expect plenty of action.
Headlining the WFC’s fourth fight card are two championship bouts.
One co-main event will feature Culpeper native Daniel “Machete” Moreno, who holds the WFC’s 155 and 170-pound championship belts. He will put his welterweight (170) title on the line against Joseph “Dynamite” Sherrain.
Moreno (7-1) defeated Sherrain in November with a flying triangle choke to win the 155-pound belt. The Zamora Boxing Gym trained fighter then beat Winston Tesi in December to earn the 170-pound title.
Moreno hasn’t fought since that Dec. 18 bout, however, and Zamora said that’s a concern.
“He is going to have to get over the butterflies quickly,” Zamora said. “It’s one thing training in the comfort of your own gym, but it’s another to get in there and fight in front of a crowd.”
Also putting his belt on the line Saturday will be 185-pound champion Arthur Milam (3-1). The Orange County native will take on Joe “The Grim” Slaughter, who made his WFC debut in December with an impressive first-round stoppage of Daniel Davenport.
“That one is going to be a war,” Zamora said. “It’s going to be a good scrap. Both guys have really good takedowns, so it may come down to whose standup is better.”
Local fighters Jamie Coleman, Shaine Adams, Cody Jenkins, Will Brill and John Maxwell will also be in action.
Adams, a heavyweight, makes his first return to the cage since WFC’s inaugural show last October. He’ll be facing heavy-handed Ben Johnson, who forced PJ Richards to submit with strikes during his debut in December.
Even though several fights have yet to be finalized, Zamora said he expects there to be anywhere between 10 to 15 bouts Saturday. He also said at least six fighters will make their WFC debuts, including Ruben Lewis who will face WFC veteran Joseph Selvig.
The doors open Saturday at 7 p.m. and the fights begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by phone at (540) 223-5360 or at Zamora Boxing Gym, 15510 Montanus Drive.
The weigh-ins for the event will be held at Zamora Boxing Gym Friday at 7:30 p.m.
