Leaders at Culpeper Regional Airport continue studying the best way to add hangar space to reduce a lengthy waiting list for aircraft storage.
Airport manager Tonya Woodward said Wednesday that plans for additional T-hangars are in the design phase, but actual construction is still probably a few years off. The airport advisory committee discussed the plans at its first meeting of the year last week.
“Primarily, we have been going after some additional grant money to try to meet our (funding) match — the local match, which we don’t have yet,” Woodward said.
Exactly how much funding the project, which would add about 40 hangars, would require, hasn’t been determined.
Woodward said the airport’s 105 T-hangars are full and about 80 people are on the waiting list. Patrons rent the spaces and the revenue is returned to the airport for maintenance and improvements.
“We have a subcommittee from the airport advisory committee that is researching what the best setup for the T hangars would be,” Woodward said.
About 130 aircraft are based at the airport; about 15 are usually tied down outdoors on the ramp rather than kept inside.
The committee will continue this year under the leadership of chairman John Hunton and vice chairman Jim Bailey. The volunteer group, which includes representatives from the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors and other county officials, oversees airport operations and planning.
